The new Alex Rider book, Crocodile Tears, is out and ready for action. I read this one because I can’t always be reading about vampire loves, fantasy worlds and out of whack survival games. I needed some good, old-fashioned (actually very technologically now) gadgetry and intrigue. You certainly get this with the Alex Rider series. There is really no pretense that this COULD happen. It is what it is, a series devoted to action and smart moves by a 14 year old recruited reluctantly to be a spy for MI6. In Crocodile Tears Alex faces a sociopath killer in the guise of a reformed Reverend. You get a little bit of nuclear catastrophe, biological GM death wishes and characters that are stock but still interesting (for as long as they manage to live). Frankly, I used to love watching ‘The Prisoner’ on tv in the wayback, and the utter cleverness of spyness always had me hooked. In books, spying, undercover intrigue or whatever you would like to call it can be just the ticket for some ‘can’t put this book down’ moments. Depends on your taste. At any rate, it’s a very readable series and, of course, Anthony Horowitz is one author who is worth keeping track of. Check out the website (listed next door).
PS: Actual spying is not so pretty and glamorous. I am not speaking from experience.
