The second meeting of teens who want to promote and make your public library a better, best, awesome for place teens (no matter where they hail from…) took place today. At this initial stage finding out the ‘why’, the ‘what’ and the ‘possibilities’ of such a group are just beginning. Today: We talked about the personal ‘why’s’ of showing up at these meetings; how those who were there could help immediately (bringing flyers for upcoming programs to their school) & talking about the TAG/C to friends; acting as ambassadors and getting the word out @ how the libes can be useful to ANYONE, including teens; ideas for promotion. So far the group has a really nice balance of ages and schools – public/private/charter & middle school to high school ages. I passed out an example of bylaws taken from an entire book on Volunteer Teen Advisory Groups…great stuff for starting this kind of library creature. I have a mission to speak with Mrs. McGrath at SHS about getting onto the announcement emails concerning the TAG startup by the next meeting. WHICH IS, BY THE WAY, OCTOBER 31ST, 3 PM…HALLOWEEN! Yes, do something altruistic that day before you indulge in all the dark and wonderful activity (safely, of course) of the All Hallow’s Eve. I am committed to creating a foundation for the TAG at our library. I believe that teens all have something to give and those of you who see the library as an active and creative (and fun) public entity here in Sandwich can make such a difference. OK, there’s a little more existential talk there, but we actually are moving along with this idea, so good. Thanks to you who came today. I’ll be in touch with all who have expressed interest so we can continue to build on this. Until next time, check this page out for news…:O) Mrs. Johnson
