WHAT A HOOT…..Carl Hiaasen comes to town…

Standard

Out there readers, Sandwich has another wordy treat on hand this Friday evening, July 30th, at the High School.  Carl Hiaasen will be on hand to talk about his latest book (an adult mystery title) to fans BUT, hey, he wrote 3 great younger reader books, too.  I am looking forward to being there because the guy has a way with words and he is HUMOUROUS.  What is humor in a book?  Done badly, well, it’s just bad and stupid. Done well it make the story inside ‘reader friendly’….I can only take so much of the intense looks of vampires, the complete collapse of our world as we know it or the honest but sad story of a teen who suffers dramatically…I like these books, too, but getting your point across and still keeping a core message with the vehicle of humor…that’s a good trick . I liked HOOT because of the environmental lean.  And because of the characters you could laugh at….funny people, serious issue.  Did I say ‘serious’?  I meant serious, like, who cares about owls or dirty water or etc., etc., etc……it’s the little things that matter even in character development and story line. Well, that’s enough of that.  Come and listen/see Carl Hiaasen on Friday, regardless of age.  You live in a town that authors love to visit and, if I do say so myself, Titcomb’s and Sandwich readers make pretty darn good hosts.

Another good thing from your local library…

Do you know, SPL card holders, that NOW you can download up to 5 songs FREE each week because you – yes, you – are a card-carrying patron of the Sandwich Public Library?  It’s true…here’s the connect….www.freegalmusic.com/users/slogin .  SPL has just signed on to this music service for patrons.  So, while you are not downloading thousands of songs, these 5/wk can add up to a nice little FREE music catalog for your personal use.  Music selections come through Sony so not everyone and their mother are available to download but a healthy choice.  Go look….and download…and listen…and then…do it again.

I feel a summer coming on…oh, wait, it’s here…

Keeping in touch with readers today.  Our book discussion group at Titcomb’s was fun! Small…but fun! Before I Fall about popular girl Samantha who has to deal with her death and how she would like ‘do over’ some events that happened, was a good read for our 3 attendees (plus Vicky Uminowicz of TBs and myself) BUT all 3 felt that ‘popular’ isn’t what it used to be.  The overwhelming consensus was that ‘popular’ was more of an issue in middle school than in high school.  Now the Populars who think they are Populars are not really Populars, they are like ‘I know I’m Popular’ but most other people don’t think they are.  You know who was offered as popular – the kind kids, the nice kids, those people who don’t make a point of dissing, judging or flaunting.  Hmmm…and then I mentioned this to another Teen Volunteer and she said,”Well, that’s true, but there still are  levels of acceptance in  high school and ‘groups’, maybe some people don’t see them or experience them, but the ‘cliques’ are there, ready and waiting to exclude and look at you cross-eyed (These is my interpretation, not her exact words).”  It really comes from perspective sometimes…like walking in someone else’s shoes or having the ability to put yourself in someone else’s place.  The alternative perspective, not your’s.  It should be obvious that I am no expert on this.  I just heard  some  comments from teens that made the small but mighty book group good.  Vicky also offered some advance reader copies of YA books and everyone took one or two or three home.  I even got one which is reading very well…Birthmarked…loving it. So, the next book group at the library will feature Gordan Korman’s POP and other sports related YA books that could be the read for you, sports book reader.
